About Street Wise: How The Streets Of Carterton, Greytown, Featherston And Martinborough Got Their Names:

Following the outstanding success of Street Stories, which recounted the origins of Masterton’s streets, the Wairarapa Archive was repeatedly asked when it was going to turn its attentions to the streets of South Wairarapa towns. Street Wise was first published in 1999. The second edition, with new streets added, by Wairarapa archivist Gareth Winter. The four towns of South Wairarapa were established differently – and this influenced street naming approaches to a greater or lesser degree. Greytown was settled under the auspices of the Small Farms Association; Carterton and Featherston were settled under the aegis of the Wellington Provincial Council; while Martinborough was a privately developed town.
